China’s Wuhan University worked with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo to develop an innovative new cooling material for the phone case.

Evaporative cooling in spacecraft and sweat dissipation in the human body are both examples of mechanisms that the Glacier Mat uses to regulate its own temperature. There is potential for self-cooling with this material.

There is no need to add additional electricity or other forms of energy to the material because the cycle is based on physical properties.

When the smartphone’s temperature rises above a certain threshold, the material evaporates water to remove the heat. When the temperature drops, the material wicks water from the air to maintain the phone’s body temperature.

The material can reduce the temperature of phones by 2.3 degrees Celsius more than other solutions after an hour of use while running apps..

OPPO’s new phone cases were made possible by the use of new materials. It may be used in computers and solar panels in the future.

The material’s expected life expectancy is still unknown.
