Serebii.net is also known as SPP (Serebii’s Pokémon Page). This is a very complex fansite created by Serebii in the autumn of 1999. At this time, several Pokémon sites were quickly starting to appear. The site first gained fame as a GeoCities site, where it was a member of the Articuno Island network. The site also had to end its affiliation with the short-lived Pokémon Official Magazine in the United Kingdom.
It is a well-known and well-reputed source of information about anime and games. The website is usually updated daily. One of the website’s most popular features is the “Pokéarth”, which is a complete list of all catchable Pokémon and in-game Trainers in every city and route.
Serebii.net’s name is based on the Romanized Japanese name for the Pokémon Celebi. The same Pokémon also serves as the site’s mascot.
History of Serebii
The original SPP site was established in October 1999 as a GeoCities site. This came about as a result of lunchtime website design sessions between two Pokémon enthusiasts, Serebii and his friend. While initially not as huge as sites like UPN, The Pokémasters, and the original Bulbagarden, Serebii soon began to establish a loyal fanbase and gain immense popularity. By 2002, after the site became Serebii.net, it established itself as one of the most prominent Pokémon fansites. It eventually overshadowed the remaining older fansites in popularity and daily activity.
The site is a hub for Pokémon information as well as Pokémon leaks. The fanbase of this site are hardcore Pokemon enthusiasts, and they keep an eye on upcoming events.
Serebii.net was initially hosted for free on a substantial variety of servers as it grew. However, once Serebii’s became popular, these servers proved inadequate, resulting in frequent interruptions. As a result, in 2003, Ledian X introduced Craig Maloof to Serebii, who offered to pay for Serebii’s server costs. Since that, Serebii.net has been hosted on Craig’s own private servers. The hosting bills are apparently being paid for by the “less annoying” single Google AdWords banner on each page of the site and forums.
In early 2006, the site had made enough money to pay Craig Maloof back for the time he funded the servers and kept the site running. It was mutually decided to move the site onto servers under the single control of Serebii, with support from ricocheting. This person had assisted Craig in running his servers in the past.
When Pokémon Black and White was released in September 2010, Serebii was among a limited number of websites to receive a “cease and desist” order from Nintendo for posting premature images of Pokémon Black and White.
Serebii made its first significant layout change to the site in over ten years, adapting the old layout to conform to mobile devices.
