Sheindlin was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to German-Jewish and Russian-Jewish parents.

Petri Hawkins-Byrd, her bailiff, stood by her for the entire 25-year run of the show, making him the longest-serving bailiff in courtroom programming history. On June 14, 2013, Judge Judy received its 15th nomination and won its first Daytime Emmy Award. In 2016, and 2017, the program won again.

Sheindlin is the longest-serving Judge or arbiter in the history of courtroom-themed programming. Her net worth was $95 million at the start of 2007, and she ranked 13th on Forbes’ list of the top 20 wealthiest women in entertainment. CBS extended Sheindlin’s contract through the 19th season in May 2011, with an annual salary increase. Her yearly salary of $47 million equated to slightly more than $900,000 per workday. In 2017, she earned $147 million before taxes, according to Forbes. The final taped case aired on June 8, 2021, followed by the series finale on July 23, 2021.

In October 2021, Byrd addressed fans publicly, saying he was “confused” and “dismayed” by Sheindlin’s habit of ignoring all communications with him about the show. She responded publicly, calling Byrd “terrific” but adding that the show needed a new and exciting direction.

Byrd would return to his televised bailiff duties for another courtroom series, which was currently in development and would be available on Amazon Freevee.

Judy married Ronald Levy in 1964, who later became a prosecutor in juvenile court. They moved to New York, had two children, Jamie and Adam and divorced after 12 years of marriage in 1976.
