In the three years  Game of Thrones came to an uneasy end, a slew of prequels have risen and died, and House of the Dragon, from co-creators George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, has survived the long night of HBO pre-production. (Along with Condal, Miguel Sapochnik, who directed Game of Thrones episodes, including the fan favourite “The Battle of the Bastards,” serves as showrunner.) And now its late-summer debut is approaching.

This summer, we got a full-length trailer after a night as long and dark as anything the Night’s Watch has ever faced. The clip, which can be seen above and includes stunning shots of battles, King’s Landing, and airborne dragons, sets up the series’ central conflict: the struggle for the Iron Throne between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Prince Daemon Targaryen.

What Characters Are in the House of the Dragon Cast?

Many people don’t look for anyone to root for among this cast of characters. Martin warned that there would be no fan favourites like in Game of Thrones, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s powerful, visceral, dark, and reminiscent of a Shakespearean tragedy. There is no Arya, a character that everyone will adore. They all have flaws. They’re all people. They do good work. They commit heinous crimes. Like humans, they are motivated by power, lust, jealousy, and old wounds. They are  as I wrote them.” Regardless, these new characters sound intriguing. HBO describes them as follows in their official press materials:

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

She is the King’s firstborn child, pure Valyrian blood, and a dragon rider. Many people believe Rhaenyra was born with everything; however, she was not born a man.

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen

King Viserys’ younger brother and Daemon, is a legendary warrior and dragon rider with dragon blood. However, it is said that every time a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin into the sky.

Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Sea Snake,”   Steve Toussaint

Lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline, dates back as far as House Targaryen. Lord Corlys, the most famous nautical adventurer in Westeros history, built his House into a powerful seat with more wealth than the Lannisters and the world’s largest navy.

Olivia Cooke plays AlicentHightower.

She was a member of House Hightower who married King Viserys I Targaryen as his second wife. Alicent Hightower was the daughter of Ser Otto Hightower, who served as Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and, later, Aegon II. Her children included King Aegon II, Queen Helaena, Prince Aemond, and Prince Daeron.

Ser Otto, the King’s Hand, serves both his King and his realm loyally and faithfully. The Hand sees the King’s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne as the greatest threat to the empire.
