Paul Anthony Sorvino (Italian, April 13, 1939 – July 25, 2022) was an American entertainer, opera singer, writer, businessman and sculptor. He frequently depicted power figures and mentors on both sides of the law. Paul Sorvino was primarily known for his roles as Lucchese crime family caporegime Paulie Cicero (because of genuine criminal Paul Vario) in Goodfellas and as NYPD Sergeant Phil Cerreta on the second time of the television series Law and Order. He played father figures, including Juliet’s father, for Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo + Juliet. He also did guest appearances as the father of Bruce Willis’ character in Moonlighting and the father of Jeff Garlin’s character in The Goldbergs. He played additional supporting character roles in A Touch of Class, Reds, The Rocketeer, The Cooler, and Nixon (as Henry Kissinger).

Sorvino was born into the world on April 13, 1939, and brought up in the Bensonhurst segment of Brooklyn. His mother, Angela Maria Mattea (1906-1991), was a homemaker and piano teacher of Italian descent who was born into the world in Connecticut. Sorvino’s father, Ford Sorvino, was an Italian (Neapolitan) immigrant who worked as a foreman in a robe manufacturing plant.
Sorvino went to Lafayette High School (where he was a classmate of painter Peter Max) and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Sorvino started his acting profession on Broadway. In 1964, he made his debut on Broadway with the musical Bajour. His first film role landed six years later in 1970 with Where’s Poppa.
